Chapter Eighteen
Katie snuggled closer to Tom on the couch, a bowl of buttery popcorn balanced precariously between them. The glow from the TV flickered across their faces as âThe Sullivan Affairâ played out its melodramatic plot. Katie's eyes darted between the screen and the screenplay in her hands, noting the differences with each passing scene. She couldn't help but feel a twinge of disappointment as she watched her carefully crafted words morph into something almost unrecognizable on screen.
"You weren't kidding about the cheese factor," Tom joked, reaching for another handful of popcorn. His arm brushed against hers, sending a small shiver down her spine. "It's like a train wreck. I can't look away."
Katie smiled, but it didn't quite reach her eyes. "Yeah, it's something alright." She hesitated, then added, "I just wish they'd stuck closer to what I'm reading. Some of these changes... they don't make sense." She sighed, trying to push away the frustration that had been building since the movie started. Despite her disappointment, she was grateful for Tom's presence and the warmth of his body next to hers.
On screen, Jasmine Scarlett sashayed across a lavishly decorated room, her eyes locked on Maximilian Sullivan. Tom raised an eyebrow. "Is that supposed to be Penelope?"
"Yep," Katie sighed. "Though the real Penelope claims she hardly had to do any seducing."
Tom snorted. "I can believe that. So, how does the original script compare?"
Katie flipped through a few pages. "It's... different. Gray seemed to have a more nuanced take on things initially. The movie really plays up the whole 'other woman' angle. Makes her seem like the sinister one."
"Hollywood loves a good villain," Tom mused. He glanced at Katie, noting her furrowed brow. "You okay?"
Katie bit her lip. "It's just... knowing the real people now, it feels weird watching this. Penelope and Alessandra weren't innocent, but they weren't the masterminds behind everything either."
"No honor among cheaters?" Tom quipped.
Katie playfully swatted his arm. "I'm serious! The movie makes it seem like they orchestrated this whole thing, but from what I've gathered, the men were just as responsible. Maybe more so."
On screen, Tabitha Sullivan dramatically confronted her husband about his infidelity. Tom winced. "Okay, I see what you mean. This is pretty heavy-handed."
"Exactly." Katie nodded. "The real story is messy and complicated. This... this is just sensationalism."
Tom wrapped an arm around her shoulders. "Hey, that's why you're investigating, right? To find the truth?"
Katie leaned into Tom, grateful for his steady presence. His arm around her shoulders provided a comforting warmth, grounding her amid the swirl of frustration. "Yeah, you're right," she murmured, her eyes still fixed on the screen. "It's just... it's more than frustrating seeing how easily people's lives can be twisted for entertainment. These were real people, with real pain, and now it's just... fodder for drama."
They watched in silence together for a moment, the over-the-top dialogue washing over them like an overly dramatic tide. Katie found herself wincing at particularly exaggerated lines, her filmmaker's instincts bristling at the heavy-handed approach. Finally, Tom spoke up, his voice soft and tinged with curiosity.
